The Best No-Cook Scented Playdough Recipe EVER

Here at WMBT HQ, we’ve given up on store-bought playdough simply because it’s too much of all the wrong things:
Toxic, expensive and uninspiring.

Controversial, we know. But hear us out

All you need to join us in the DIY corner is the right recipe that is easy to make and fills your munchkin’s heart with pure joy.

This no-cook, scented playdough recipe delivers a consistency that makes you want to dig your fingers into the goodness and fills the room with the most glorious aroma of your choice. And if you store it in an airtight container, it will last you for days (possibly weeks).

Once you’ve got your playdough stash in all colours of the rainbow, let your tiny human explore the textures and smells with their very own We Might Be Tiny Australian Stampies set. Koala, kangaroo and wombat LOVE a playdough session as much as you do!

Each Australian Stampies set comes with a stainless steel cookie cutter, 1 wooden stamper and all your favourite Aussie animals that can turn playtime from yawn to yay.

So here it is, the best no-cook scented playdough recipe EVER (the exact one we love using at WMBT HQ):

Ingredients

  • 390 g (3 cups) flour
  • 370 g (1 ½ cups) salt
  • 80 g (½ cup) cream of tartar
  • 10-12 drops essential oil
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 500 ml (2 cups) boiling water
  • natural food colouring

What we used

  • salt
  • flour
  • natural food colouring

How much we spent

  • 1 kg salt $1.50
  • 1 kg flour $1
  • natural food colouring $4-$6
  • essential oil $15-$25 (Citrus essential oils, lavender, and peppermint are some of our favourite oils for scented playdough. Depending on the quality of the oil, the number of drops required may vary.)

Instructions

Add the dry ingredients to a large bowl. Combine the essential oil with the cooking oil then add to dry ingredients, mixing to combine.

Add food colouring to the boiling water then pour into the bowl. Stir well until the mixture leaves the sides of the bowl. If the mixture is too sticky, add a little more flour.

Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for a few minutes before wrapping in parchment paper and allowing to rest for 15 minutes.

Choose your favourite Australiana Stampies and make some animal magic.
