Do you feel that, mums?
The temperature is rising - and we all know what’s coming next. We’re seeing the tail-end of spring and gearing up for a much warmer season.
This also means that spring and summer parties are just around the corner!
Raise your hand if you have loads of extra time to prepare a spread guaranteed to gain smiles from kids and adults alike!
No one?
Same.
Just like all mums, we always seem to be pressed for time. But that doesn’t mean we’ll skimp on the goods when it comes to our munchkins.
So with the thought of a thousand kids swarming your household, we bring you a super quick, healthy, and scrumptious party food idea.
Because there’s nothing better than a refreshingly delicious, no-sweat summer treat. Pun intended - here’s our favourite go-to recipe at the WMBT HQ, the Watermelon Pizza. You’ll have kids and adults alike coming back for seconds, guaranteed!
And guess what mums, if you like this recipe, you will enjoy the other nine included in WMBT’s soon-to-be-released booklet, ‘Party Foods’. There you’ll find various nutrilicious recipes that are a treat for the eyes and the tiny tummies. Rocking party preps has never been this easy! So be sure to check that one out, too.
Summer Party Eye Candy
Not only is this a more summer-satisfying option than your typical cheesy pizza, it makes for such a pretty party spread!
The best part is that it can also double as a fun activity all the kids can get in on.
Before the party starts, let tiny hands help identify and wash the fruits! Simply gather and slice up all the ingredients beforehand.
And then when you have a nice little buffet going, the kids can decorate their own watermelon pizza with their toppings of choice.
Having an interactive finger food activity like this where they can be creative encourages even the pickiest eaters to get excited and gobble the meal right up.
Worried about the sticky mess? You don’t have to be, especially if you serve this Watermelon Pizza on silicone placemats.
We like to use the WMBT Placies because not only do they amp up the cute factor of anything you choose to serve, but it’s also a breeze to wash and wipe them down after use. And for busy mums who spent the day prepping, this is a sanity saver.
What’s In Our Pizza
This Watermelon Pizza recipe uses only five ingredients and yet it's loaded with both taste and nutrients.
Let’s break down all the goodness in our fabulously fresh, show-stopper:
Watermelon
Watermelons are super juicy and taste like candy, but they’re actually free of added sugars and filled with vitamins, fibre, and flavour. They’re also made up of 93% water and 7% fruit meat so they’re the perfect summertime snack to serve during the hot weather.
Remember to use a seedless watermelon for the recipe. Seeds will be hidden beneath the ‘toppings’ and will be harder for little ones to spot.
Natural or Greek Yoghurt
Loaded with calcium, protein, vitamins, and potassium. Yoghurt is a fast favourite for parents and kids to support overall health. From fat-free to full fat, and plain to Greek, there are lots of options out there.
For this recipe, we found that plain or Greek worked best so as not to overpower the sweet, subtle flavours of fresh fruits. You can also try swapping yoghurt out for freshly whipped cream.
For the toppings, you can get as creative as you want. Some of our favourites over at the WMBT HQ include:
- Mango
- Kiwi
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
- Blackberries
- Raisins
- Unsweetened coconut flakes
- Sprinkle of fresh mint
Make it extra saucy with a drizzle of honey, maple syrup, or peanut butter.
Add a fun crunch with seeds, granola, banana chips, or crushed cereal.
The great thing about this no-fuss dish is it’s super flexible! You can use what’s in season or what you have on hand.
